Orientational order of one-patch colloidal particles in two dimensions.
We studied the orientational order of one-patch colloidal particles (Janus particles) in a close-packed monolayer. In an experiment on hemispherically patched particles, we realized a highly ordered zigzag stripe pattern by inducing directional growth of the pattern via a phase transition of the solvent. Upon spontaneous ordering by strengthening the inter-patch attraction, however, the particl...
متن کاملCompeting Condensates in Two Dimensions
We generalize our previous 2-dimensional model in which a pairing condensate 〈ψψ〉 was generated at large N . In the present case, we allow for both 〈ψψ〉 and a chiral condensate 〈ψ̄ψ〉 to exist. We construct the effective potential to leading order in 1 N , and derive the gap equations at finite density and temperature. We study the zero density and temperature situation analytically. We perform t...
متن کاملOctupolar order in two dimensions.
Octupolar order is described in two space dimensions in terms of the maxima (and conjugated minima) of the probability density associated with a third-rank, fully symmetric and traceless tensor. Such a representation is shown to be equivalent to diagonalizing the relevant third-rank tensor, an equivalence which however is only valid in the two-dimensional case.
متن کاملAudiovisual temporal recalibration occurs independently at two different time scales
Combining signals across the senses improves precision and speed of perception, although this multisensory benefit declines for asynchronous signals. Multisensory events may produce synchronized stimuli at source but asynchronies inevitably arise due to distance, intensity, attention and neural latencies. Temporal recalibration is an adaptive phenomenon that serves to perceptually realign physi...
متن کاملOpening up extra dimensions at ultralarge scales.
The standard picture of viable higher-dimensional theories is that direct manifestations of extra dimensions occur at short distances only, whereas long-distance physics is effectively four-dimensional. We show that this is not necessarily true in models with infinite extra dimensions. As an example, we consider a five-dimensional scenario with three 3-branes in which gravity is five dimensiona...
